History

Once home to the 5,000 year old Kombumerri tribe, Burleigh Headland or Jellurgal was a traditional festival and feasting ground that still holds deep spiritual significance for indigenous Australians. Formed millions of years ago by a volcanic eruption, the Kombumerri people tell of how Jabreen, the Creation Spirit, stretched on awakening, and his long fingers can still be seen today as rocky formations protruding from the headland.

Burleigh was settled as a quiet fishing village that became increasingly visited by tourists from the early 1,900s. This saw early development of restaurants and guesthouses. Burleigh has been the centre of beach activities for many years with a long history as a beautiful holiday haven.
